Modern Patio Design
Before working in this project I searched the internet and YouTube for modern back yard and patio design ideas, but wasn’t able to find many that were modern and contemporary. So I decided to document my build to give others ideas. The project took about 2 weeks to complete, but that’s because I worked on it in the evenings when I got home from work.

I get a small percent of your sales and it doesn’t cost you anything) General Amazon Shopping link: www.amazon.com AC/DC Arc Welder: www.amazon.com – I recommend an arc welder with DC (much smoother) over mig/tig due to cost and also, from what I’ve heard, when using mig outdoors your gas can get blown away and screw things up. Stick welding is pretty rugged. 6011 Welding Rods: www.amazon.com – I started my first project using 6013 welding rods. BIG MISTAKE! The 6013 is a shallow penetrating welding rod. Better for sheet metal from what I’ve been told. I’ve used 10 lbs of rod at the point shown in this project (plus about 4 rods from my second box). 15 lbs will do the project, but I’d recommend getting at least 20 lbs so you can have some to practice with. (And if you haven’t/don’t weld, practice alot. I learned you can never practice too much!) Welding Gloves: www.amazon.com – I’m on my second pair. Mostly because I keep my hands to close to the arc. If it’s wet or hot out (and you’re sweating) I recommend changing gloves often as they get wet. A wet glove can cause you to get shocked (shocking I know). Right angle clamp: www.amazon.com – I bought three and have had all three several times. I would have bought 4, but they only had 3 in stock when I purchased.

Construction of my Outdoor Fireplace
(Passed 100000 views today – 01/11/2011!! Thanks!!) Constructed in July-August, 2008, it includes about 175 cinder blocks, 50 solid blocks, a few hundred 80 year old bricks (which came from my house foundation when it was rebuilt a few months prior) for the stack, Sandstone for the flat surface/shelf areas, river rock for the front vertical faces, black marble for the fireplace floor, and approx. 650 patio bricks with 8 bags of sand. The Patio edge is roughly 13 1/2 feet long each side which calculates to about 185 sq ft.. EDIT (May 2009): Just had to rebuild the underside of the fire box. The black marble floor that was exposed and had no support underneath, became brittle, cracked, and broke away over the last 9 months and had to be rebuilt with a solid block base under the new fire box floor. Not too difficult to fix, but was still an unexpected expense.
