The Refractive Index of Media

Toluene solutions dry more rapidly than those in xylene, some technicians think, too rapidly. Clarite may be secured as a lump resin if preferred, when it is made up as a 60% solution; 60% resin and 40% xylene, toluene, benzene, or dioxan, the latter preferred for the dioxan technique. A second Neville product is termed Clarite X, which is somewhat cheaper, yellows slightly but not as much as the natural balsams, and has a higher refractive index.

Hunting Safaris

6月 29, 2010 · Posted in 未分類 · Comment

In most countries around the world it is illegal for anyone to just hunt animals, and in many cases it is also impractical since most game is isolated and not kept in the wild as such. Despite this however, people still maintain the desire to hunt wild game and the solution comes in the form of hunting safari’s. Hunting lodges are very much like game farms in the sense that they isolate game in their natural environment. The only real difference is that a game lodge’s main priority for breeding and maintaining game populations is so that they can be hunted. Even though the existence of these hunting lodge’s allow people to hunt game more freely, the people who hunt there are still required to have a hunting licence or permit.

The Cruel Trap Held Fast

The moon shone brightly on the tawny form of a mountain lion as he moved swiftly, a shifting shadow, along the rocky trail. He had traveled many miles, a score or more, with scarcely a moment’s rest, and he was hungry.

Chanting of the Chuckwill’s Widow

Has mankind always been wrong about the moon, or does that orb have powers for good or ill (chiefly the latter) second only to those of that master of our sub-universe, the sun? Any dictionary suggests the story with such terms as moon blasted, moon-sick, moon-struck, lunatic, and so on. Poets have abundantly sung of the influence of the moon upon lovers and we popularly recognize it by calling them loony or moony.

That Old Favourite – Venetian Turpentine

6月 29, 2010 · Posted in 未分類 · Comment

Another old favorite still has its uses, especially in the preparation of whole mounts of delicate materials, notably filamentous algae, as Spirogyra. This is Venetian turpentine, the technique for which is advanced and tricky, requiring considerable experience for successful manipulation. Hyrax, Styrax, and a few others that have a high index of refraction, are far superior for whole mounts of diatom shells and are virtually limited to that field of interest.

The Preference For Canadian Balsam

6月 29, 2010 · Posted in 未分類 · Comment

Large or heavy objects, as foram shells or starfish eggs, will drift to an edge of the cover glass, even after a year or more, unless the slide is kept flat at all times. Perhaps the most serious defect of balsam, however, is that stained sections mounted in this medium frequently fade, sometimes in a short period of time. The fading starts at the edges and works inward.

American Eagles of the High Sierra

6月 29, 2010 · Posted in 未分類 · Comment

MANY years ago an American eagle sailed gracefully through the azure blue of California skies, his keen eyes scanning the earth below in search of food. There were few trees in which a bird could perch in this particular hunting ground, 60 he hunted on the wing. Having located a small animal he would swoop down, snatch the luckless creature in his claws and fly away.
