A Short Break in the Countryside
Summer is here, the weather outside is hot and sunny and there is a long way until we leave on vacation. So, what can we do in the weekends? What are the best choices to escape the hot and torrid summer days?

The Sale of Winds
No landsman who goes to sea-or stays home and reads Marryat and Clark Russell Conrad and William McFee-can fail to be impressed with the observation that the sailor’s ideas about weather differ materially from those prevailing on shore, and that he has a vocabulary peculiar to himself for discussing its doings. On land we generally think of the temperature of the air as the most important element of weather. The ups and downs of the thermometer form the staple of our weather conversations, but it seems to be all one to the sailor whether the rigging is stiff with frozen spray or the deck is oozing pitch in the inferno of the Red Sea.

Warm, Cuddly and Oh So Tiny!
Another time that we searched for the missing Mrs. Roo. Katy found her sound asleep in a rose-colored teacup on the breakfast porch. One night Mr. Kangar chewed a hole in the screen and hopped away.

Like a Lovesick Yokel
Out of the south, from every tangent, flocks of geese were calling, and Valiant and his comrades, slanting down in happy weariness toward the sweet water, gave tongue to that quickened measure which celebrates the end of a night flight. It is a poor thing, this translation, since it cannot hope to capture that bright resonance which is in bells, trumpets, bugles, and the throat of the flock.

Her Eyes Were Bright With Wisdom
Of mornings, while the lake exhaled a wreathing mist, Valiant and the flock of Geese followed the Old One to the feeding grounds, and were soundly drilled in the maneuvers of flight. Thus, it was proper at times to break formation, creating of the one flock from two to four lesser V’s, that these might he united again at the Old One’s call, in orderly evolution. And on hearing the stubble he would give them leave to swing forward on either flank, until the line of trumpeters advanced abreast, flying slowly as they chatted of the field beneath.

The Generous Mr Pack
During the First World War there was ghastly devastation of French forests, first by the Germans, not only in obtaining necessary supplies for the military purposes but also in deliberate destruction. For instance, at Pont-a-Mousson, near Nancy, I have seen the very soil mined to a depth of six feet. In addition, in their own need of supply, tribute had to be imposed on the forests by the French, English and Americans in Great Britain, France, Belgium and Italy.

Saving the Wild Seeds
With the first warm days of spring, Nature lovers are taking to the woods and fields and few return without having picked at least a few of the first attractive flowers to be discovered. Unfortunately most flowers do not take kindly to being carried for any length of time in the hand, or worn in the buttonhole, without soon presenting a sadly wilted appearance. Many will not revive if placed in water, and the paths and roadsides adjoining the cities are often strewn with large bouquets that have given little or no satisfaction to the well-meaning gatherer.

Ghost of a Color
There was a movement to the air, undulant, as a long smooth swell at sea. The flock of geese rose with it, dipped, and rose again. And once, when the thin moon pressed through a cloud, the bend of a river flickered like a drawn blade; and once, from a hidden lake, lost in night and drizzle, certain of their clan gave tongue and called to them; and at another time they heard the softened, idle yammering of dogs; the sweetness of a bell; a faint, far engine panting up a hill.

Downward to a Drowsy World
It was late afternoon, nearing a gray twilight, when the lord of the flock sent a single trumpet tone ringing through the wetness-a wild and joyous note that stilled all gossip and lifted every head from the gleaning. For the call was the call of the sky lanes, and, as such, an order not to be denied. They were to quit the South and its rice fields on a quest for new pastures and for April.
